It was 4th October 20XX. I received an SMS…”Rs XXXXX has been debited from your account. Your remaining balance is Rs 29.”
It was not a shock to me. I had somehow managed to pay the full amount for a small plot of land I had purchased recently. I had gotten sick of changing multiple homes living on rent. Also, I never liked flats. I felt more comfortable with the idea of building my home, my way, on my own piece of land.
My problem had begun the day I took my father to see the plot of land I had paid an advance money (Token/Bayana) for. When my father looked at the plot dimensions, he asked, ‘What is your plan? Are you planning to build a shop or a home?’
The problem was with the breadth of the plot. It was very small as compared to its length. With my current salary, it was the best I could afford. And primarily because it was in the suburbs far away from the city. My hands were already tight with the amount of savings I had and the maximum amount of personal loan I was eligible for.
Finally, I took two personal loans in parallel from two different banks to buy double the size of the plot. It was required as my maximum eligibility from one bank was not sufficient enough to cover the total cost. Kindly don’t ask me how? It’s a long story.
And now it was just the beginning of the month and I was left with Rs 29 only to pay for my food, clothes, commute to the office and even pay rent. I had to do something urgently.
I felt like a complete loser as I was left with no money. I started thinking that even after being a college and university topper and a gold medalist, I couldn’t even afford a plot of land for myself. What about others who are not blessed like me and earn much lesser?
Soon I started looking for other high-paying jobs. During the course, I had a chance encounter with one of my college buddies who was now working with a Big 4. I narrated the entire story.
He advised me against job change and told me, ‘Even though you earn less here, you at least have some work-life balance and job security. If you switch to a bigger company, they will make you a dog for your entire life for a few extra bucks. Also, you will have no work-life balance or job security.’
‘Why don’t you explore other options while still continuing to work with the same company?’ he suggested.
And my part-time income journey started back then.
Another major breakthrough incident happened almost 3 years later when my part-time business crashed. Just to support many of my team members qualify for the Thailand Trip promotion, I maxed out all my credit cards. I had also given advance for two other plots as income was flowing steadily.
I heard about some fight among few of the top leaders of my business. Also, the Company was slowly diverting its attention away from the product/service I was promoting to some other healthcare product which I was sure would never work in a country like ours.
The worst came. The Company shut its shop. Leaders vanished in thin air. Team scattered.
None of my team members for whom I had paid the money picked up my call. Some who picked up after multiple follow-ups had their own sob stories of loss where they had taken money from someone else as well to invest in the business. I was BOMBED!!!
I was stuck with Rs 15 Lacs+ credit card debt with a limited salary coming. To add to the woes, the property dealer refused to pay me back Rs 5 lacs+ advance I had given as I had no other option than to cancel one of my plot deals. For the other plot, I requested more time.
I was reeling under deep debt. Credit card companies started calling me now and then intimidating me of dire consequences. Other lenders came, knocked the doors, spitted holy words and went away. They had no other choice.!!!
Friends and relatives pitied in front and laughed away behind my back.
My close ones could clearly see the sorrow, despair, and helplessness on my face but could no nothing as they themselves were struggling financially.
All this put me into deep depression.
It was in these trying times my wife helped with whatever limited salary she earned and my job that helped me manage the worst phase of my financial life.
I resolved never to take debt again whatever be the situation once I get out of this.
But even after all this, I kept looking for creative solutions. It was there I stumbled upon the AAA System and POST Framework that helped me post my debt worries behind and put me back more strongly on my journey towards financial freedom.
